Finished Howard the Dinosaur

So I finally finished what became the bane of my existence for several weeks- the dinosaur soft toy for my sons first birthday.

My husband suggested the name

He turned out pretty well considering it’s the first toy I have made that isn’t crocheted, I made the pattern myself, and I have only been using a sewing machine this year. Not perfect, but jeez you have to start somewhere.

Here is Howard, on my son’s dresser, with his friends

It turned out pretty well considering it’s the first toy I have made that isn’t crocheted, I made the pattern myself, and I have only been using a sewing machine this year. Not perfect, but jeez you have to start somewhere.

I used scraps of fabric I had left over from other projects, because I’m an eco-nerd and I don’t like things to go to waste. I made the initial pattern using op-shop bed sheets instead of proper pattern making paper stuff, because who even has money?

I will endeavour to write up the pattern in the next week (a freebie), but be warned I have a few other things to do as well. Birthday plans to finalise, an extension to build (or to furiously procrastinate over), and Christmas presents to buy.

Yes, I am aware it’s October. I don’t care. I f*#$ing love Christmas! Also I am having a huge amount of fun experimenting with furoshiki, the Japanese art of wrapping stuff in squares of fabric. Pics to come soon!

Thank you again for reading, I hope you like my little dinosaur. He took a lot of hard work, but I’m sure my son will enjoy biting his face.

      1. That’s the first toy I’ve sewn, and the 4th thing I’ve sewn altogether (using the sewing machine). I’m sure if a novice like me could do it you could too!
I’m giving it to him for his first birthday, this Thursday 😊

      2. Wow so exciting. Happy 1st Birthday to him! I am sure he will like it…
Talking about novice, I can’t tell at all if you don’t mention from what you made! I am sure that I can’t do as good as you for sure. I tempted to use the sewing machine before and it was not a successful experience πŸ™‚ But i will try again tonight, trying to make the cape for my boy’s Magician costume for Halloween! I will blog about that next week…

      3. I can’t wait to see the result!!

Yeah historically speaking I haven’t been great at the sewing machine. When I was in high school I tried, and failed, to make a hat in home economics class. Since then I have avoided using one until Mr Makeables asked me to make him an outfit for LARP. I had to redo the damn thing so many times before I got it right.
